College Football Kickoff Weekend in Alabama

Saturday is the big day! Anticipation is in the air! Thousands upon thousands are feeling all jittery! It is the first "official" day of football season in Alabama. I hope everyone has tested the grills and has an extra bag of charcoal or an extra tank of gas. It is going to be a day of football, fellowship, family, and feeding the face. What fun!
Alabama has a fighting match against Western Carolina. Auburn gets to tussle Kansas State, and UAB gets to go head to head against Michigan State. Thousands will be gathered at these campuses to partake in the pregame festivities.
So, whether it's the "Sweet Home Alabama" gathering at the quad and tailgating by your RV at Alabama, participating in The Tiger Walk at Auburn, or sitting (and jumping) off the couch at home, your bound to have loads of fun.
How are the games going to turn out? We have no idea yet. We are hoping to see a lot of touchdowns on Saturday, but only for those teams from Alabama. Of course we are pulling for a 3-0 day with no losses for the teams from Alabama.

Vestavia Alabama Real Estate Guide and Community Tour

 It all started in the early 1920's as a few well to do families started making their way up the mountain building homes here and there over looking the valley. One of the first of these was a gentleman by the name of George Battey Ward, who bought about 20 acres on the crest. He built a home he named Vestavia as it was designed after the Temple of Vesta in Rome. He also added a garden gazebo, modeled after the Temple of Sibyl at Tivoli, across the road from his home.

Upon his death in 1940,  Charles Byrd purchased the property. Byrd had begun some development and appropriately named the place Vestavia Hills in 1946. The gazebo, seen here, was moved to this location. In 1950, four years later, the 607 residents formed their own town. By Vestavia's fiftieth anniversary in 2000, the town had grown to over 25,000.

Clumpies Ice Cream Company, Crestline (Mountain Brook) - The Real Scoop

 Just a few minutes drive from home, and a short walk from my oldest son's favorite park, the Tot Lot, in Crestline (Mountain Brook) Alabama sits a quaint little ice cream shop, Clumpies Ice Cream Company. Just saying those words makes my mouth water. (Please pardon me as I stop typing to dab the drool from my lip.)

Clumpies, which first came to the Mountain Brook Area of Birmingham Alabama about a year ago, is in one of the three exclusive shopping centers of Mountain Brook, Crestline Village which also has several great eateries such as Surin of Thailand, Fire, O'Teys Tavern, Zoes Kitchen, or La Paz which offer a scrumptious dinner before you run, yes I did say run, over to Clumpies for desert. (for directions from wherever you are to Clumpies via Google Maps.)

They have a lick-smacking variety of flavors to choose from. While I love the Blackberry White Chocolate Chunk, my wife loves the Chocolate Chocolate Chunk Raspberry, and my oldest loves the Sweet Cream (for now). My youngest still loves the bottle, but I am sure he will have a favorite soon.

If my kids have anything to say about it, Clumpies will definitely be around for a long time. If you need further proof that Clumpies is the best ice cream around, just check out this link. Fountains Use Recycled Water: Alabama Drought 2007

 Alabama has been in drought conditions all summer. Lawns are browning, trees are loosing leaves, flowers and shrubs are wilting and dying away. The Birmingham Water Works has issued a Stage 3 drought alert limiting what days you can water your lawn. They have also requested that you don't wash you cars, trucks, etc... until further notice. Fines are being issued and the public has been asked to asked to report those who are violating the rules.

This has brought about signs like this being seen everywhere from car washes, golf courses, and even shopping centers like the one where I took this photgraph.

I have to ask though. Doesn't water evaporate in extreme heat? Is the water there today the same that was there yesterday? Probably not... but as with anything else, I guess this is just a sign of the times.

Chinese Language All the Rage at Some Local Schools in Birmingham

My family and I had the opportunity to meet with two teachers from China and grab a bite of lunch this weekend. These two teachers have been brought here to teach at Highlands School working with children from their family center all the way through 8th grade. What a remarkable opportunity for them and for the kids at this school.

But they aren't the only ones! This is fast becoming a trend at a small amount of schools in the greater Birmingham area. Mountain Brook High School and Indian Springs School are both offering Chinese to students at their schools.

Kathryn Woodson Barr, the Highlands Head of Schools said, "Chinese just seems like the next big thing for youngsters, even here in Alabama. Plans to hold the 2008 Olympics in Beijing has brought even more interest...China is in the news so much and we're doing so much business with China. If children are going to be prepared to be in the business world, they need to have a little knowledge of the Chinese language and culture." The two teachers that Highlands School has brought state that "You can't imagine how marvelous Chinese is, and I think if you know China you will love it. Only if we learn about each other can we know each other," and "We really want 100 percent participation for this. It's important for every student to be exposed to this, and for every teacher, too."

I think it's remarkable how so many schools here in the Birmingham area are expanding their curriculum to a truly multicultural experience. Looks like some uncommon things are happening in Alabama and it's a good thing. I included the article to give some background on what's happening here.
